Ekko Chair
An echo of architecture, translated into seating. Developed in collaboration with Henning Larsen, the Ekko Chair originates from Højvangen Church — conceived not as an object within architecture, but as a continuation of it. Now expanded with veneer and upholstered editions.
Born from Architecture
Originally designed for Højvangen Church in Skanderborg, the Ekko Chair was shaped by the same principles as the building itself — openness, clarity and quiet permanence. Rather than acting as furniture placed within a space, the chair was developed as part of the architectural system, contributing to how the space is experienced, used and understood.

An Echo: Space, Time and Us
Named after the Danish word for “echo”, Ekko reflects the architectural language of the church — its columns, beams and structural rhythm. It echoes:
space — translating architectural elements into human scale
time — referencing the tradition of Danish church seating
spirit — expressing a sense of openness and connection

The Ekko Chair marks the return of Henning Larsen’s studio to chair design after more than six decades, celebrating a renewed exploration of Danish design heritage and its timeless relevance. The vision was to blend enduring values of sustainability, aesthetics, durability, and materiality, creating a piece that stands the test of time.

Making the Form Possible
A wooden chair with 90-degree angles and no supporting structures typically defies conventional structural logic, often resulting in a limited lifespan. With Ekko, this challenge was addressed through an intensive development process. Over eighteen months, Brdr. Krüger engineered a specialised mortise-and-tenon joint to realise the design — tested through extensive prototyping. “Many prototypes broke along the way, but we’re proud to have created a chair that uncompromisingly combines elegance with robustness. This is a chair designed to endure, both within and beyond the church,” says Jonas Krüger, Brdr. Krüger.
Built for Collective Use
The Ekko chair meets EN 16139 — L2, suitable for non-domestic use, while remaining stackable and suitable for linking in row configurations — making it ideal for high-traffic, collective environments.
Shaped by Craft
All Ekko Chairs are handcrafted in Denmark.
• PEFC-certified wood from responsibly managed forests
• Steam-bent backrest — shaping rather than cutting
• Handwoven linen webbing (original version).
• Hand-oiled and finished surfaces.
Extending the Structure
The Ekko Chair is now expanded into a cohesive collection. New veneer and upholstered editions introduce refined material expressions and increased comfort — while maintaining the chair’s architectural clarity, structural rhythm and stackability.
The veneer edition forms a continuous, graphic surface through carefully selected and book-matched wood, reinforcing the silhouette.
The upholstered edition adds a slim, integrated cushion, bringing softness and ergonomic support without altering the geometry.
Versatility by Design
“The chair’s versatility allows it to move seamlessly between environments — from churches to workplaces and hospitality settings,” says — Anders Astrup Andersen, Senior Designer, Henning Larsen Architects
In Dialogue with the Interior
In collaboration with Andersen & Maillard Coffee Roastery & Bakery in Copenhagen, the Ekko Chair is placed within a setting characterised by material honesty and soft minimalism. In this context, Ekko in fumed oak integrates seamlessly into the interior, highlighting its adaptability across architectural and hospitality environments.
Transparency and Responsibility
A carbon emissions report is available for the Ekko Chair with linen webbing, offering insight into its environmental impact across the full lifecycle.
