Henning Larsen Architects have completed the modern Højvang Church in Skanderborg, Denmark, while also designing the new Ekko Chair in close collaboration with Brdr. Krüger.
The traditional church has been reimagined as a destination for contemporary needs: a welcoming meeting space that connects with its congregation. The square floor plan, with angled wall columns, creates a space where light pours in from all directions.
Multiple entryways lead to the pulpit and baptismal font, centrally located on the floor among the congregation. Surrounding it are 300 Ekko Chairs arranged in circular formations, forming a pattern reminiscent of ripples in water.
The architecture is rooted in the community. The design process has been based on a thorough anthropological study that has mapped the rhythms and needs of the neighborhood. This knowledge has provided a clear direction for the architecture and programming of the church.

This inclusive approach has also inspired the design of the new Ekko Chair, rooted in a commitment to honest design. Its simple aesthetic allows hundreds of chairs to harmonize with their surroundings, while still retaining individual character. Though originally conceived for the
church, the Ekko Chair has become a permanent part of Brdr. Krüger’s collection and is poised for a life beyond its origins.
Anders Astrup Andersen, Senior Designer at Henning Larsen, worked closely with Jonas Krüger, Design Director at Brdr. Krüger, refining the chair’s concept. Their goal was to create a design that mirrored the architectural identity of the church and its liturgical elements, while also standing strong as an independent piece.
